Training Schedule

Facility Tours & Animal Handling Training

Our facility tour and animal handling training sessions are typically held on the:

  • 1st Tuesday of each month at 1:00 p.m.

  • 3rd Wednesday of each month at 1:00 p.m.

To schedule a tour and rodent handling session, please complete Steps 1–4 below before requesting a session.

Steps to Complete Before Scheduling

  1. Be added to the approved IACUC protocol. The Principal Investigator (PI) must add all new personnel to the approved Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) animal use protocol. For questions, contact the IACUC office at 304-293-7073.

  2. Complete CITI IACUC Required Training. All new personnel must successfully complete the online IACUC Required Training modules through CITI.

  3. Submit the Occupational Health Questionnaire. Complete the brief Occupational Health Questionnaire for animal handlers and receive clearance to work with animals.

  4. Complete OLAR Facility Training (for HSC and LSB personnel). Personnel working in HSC or LSB must complete the OLAR Facility Training module in SOLE and score 80% or higher on the quiz. HSC personnel should then email olartraining@hsc.wvu.edu to schedule their tour and rodent handling session with OLAR staff. LSB personnel will be trained by their PI, but may also contact olartraining@hsc.wvu.edu for additional training if needed.

Requesting Facility Access

Once Steps 1–4 are complete, the PI must submit an animal facility access request on behalf of the new lab member. Be sure to include the new member’s 700/800 number in the request.

Facility Access Activation

When activated for access, your WVU ID will be accepted at animal facility entrance card readers. Abuse of access privileges may result in deactivation.
