Communities

HSTA's Impact Starts Right Here at Home

Our students help their communities tackle local health and wellness challenges common across rural America. Many go on to earn college degrees in science, technology, engineering, and math—and more than 80% stay in West Virginia to live and work in the places that supported them. Each year, HSTA brings over half a million dollars in federal grants into the state, and graduates’ careers generate a 2-to-1 return on every state dollar invested in the program.

HSTA's Greatest Impact Is on Its Students

Through strong mentoring, academic challenge, and community involvement, students build confidence, leadership, and the skills to thrive in college and beyond. They work hard, lift each other up, and give back—leaving high school ready to earn a degree and pursue meaningful STEM+M careers.

Colleges and Universities

West Virginia’s colleges and universities that partner with HSTA gain a lot in return.

  • They help strengthen STEM+M education across the state.

  • They recruit motivated students who are more likely to graduate.

  • They build stronger connections with local communities.

  • They collaborate with researchers studying West Virginia’s unique needs.

  • They help more students enter and succeed in health, science, and other STEM+M careers.
