WVU researchers take youth substance use prevention into rural communities

West Virginia University public health researchers, led by Alfgeir Kristjansson, co-director of the West Virginia Prevention Research Center in the School of Public Health, are working collaboratively with local partners, like county health departments, to stop drug use in youth before it starts, driving federal grant money to some of the state’s poorest counties and developing approaches tailored to individual communities.

20 years later, MUSHROOM continues to give back to the community

Multidisciplinary UnSheltered Homeless Relief Outreach of Morgantown (MUSHROOM) is a student-led organization at West Virginia University that brings together students who are passionate about serving their community. While the organization is rooted in health sciences, its mission extends beyond the textbooks and clinical training. Open to all WVU students, MUSHROOM offers a way to step outside the classroom and into the community, gaining real world experience while giving back to the community they call home.

Beckley nursing students support health fair

WVU School of Nursing Beckley Campus juniors in NSG 311 Medical-Surgical Nursing recently helped host a Community Health and Resource Fair at Wellspring of Greenbrier. Students provided blood pressure screenings, blood glucose checks, mental health education, and basic “Stop the Bleed” training for community members.
