Pre-Nursing student selected for SURE program
Emma Pittman, a pre-nursing student, has been selected for a Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE). SURE is for students interested in graduate school and research or creative work within their discipline or a related discipline.
“I want to be involved in research to understand how to best provide continuity of care to my future patients,” Pittman said. “I didn’t realize that there were research opportunities for nursing until I came to WVU. I am hoping that this opportunity will make me more well-rounded as a nurse when I graduate.”
Angel Smothers, a clinical associate professor with the WVU School of Nursing, will serve as Pittman’s faculty mentor for the program.
“For the first time in the WVU School of Nursing history, one of our undergraduate students have been awarded a SURE program spot for the summer of 2022,” Smothers said.
Smothers said she hopes to continue working with the SURE program to keep the School of Nursing involved.
“The SURE program allows undergraduate students to participate in research with a mentor early, which prepares the student to enroll in graduate studies in the future,” said Dr. Ubolrat Piamjariyakul, PhD, Associate Dean of Research.
Selected students will complete the program from May 31 through July 29, 2022. SURE participants receive a stipend and are expected to engage in research activities full-time (an average of 40 hours per week over the course of the eight-week summer period).
