Dean Hulsey hosts WVU School of Nursing Retreat for faculty, staff

Tara Hulsey, Dean and E. Jane Martin Endowed Professor, hosted a retreat for WVU School of Nursing faculty and staff, offering a State of the School address, acknowledging faculty and staff awards and achievements, and celebrating doctoral graduates.

During the May 12 event, Dean Hulsey presented Joy Maramba and Kelly Morton with Dean Spirit awards.

The Dean shared an overview of research efforts, including 11 externally funded grants totaling $1.4 million; eight internally funded grants totaling $50,000; and five pending grants totaling more than $7 million.

She discussed priorities, including responding to West Virginia’s needs around increasing the nursing workforce. She also shared expansion plans for the School of Nursing throughout the state.

Dean Hulsey shared that Kari Sand-Jecklin, Aletha Rowlands and Sam Cotton will be retiring, and all have been granted emeritus status.

The Dean also discussed the culture at the School of Nursing, which focuses on Civility, Accountability, Excellence, Professionalism and Communication. She encourages faculty and staff to reach out to her directly to share, “What’s on Your Mind?


After Dean Hulsey’s presentation, Ashley Tasker and Brad Phillips offered a presentation on Digital Measures and Maramba hosted School of Nursing elections. Veronica Gallo held a presentation, “Looking at the NCHA Data through the lens of resilience, belonging and health disparities,” and Angel Smothers shared an update from the Office of Research, including undergraduate student research and scholarly work.

Two representatives from Sports Exercise and Performance Psychology, Jarad Lewellen and Jaxson Judkins, led team building exercises for the group, and afterward, a celebration was held for recent doctoral graduates.
