Wound simulation teaches Keyser Campus nursing students how to identify and treat burns

KEYSER, W.Va. — Senior nursing students on the Keyser Campus recently participated in a classroom burn wound simulation for their NSG 460 critical care course.

During the activity, each small group was presented with a manikin arm with a burn wound. Working collaboratively with their small group members, students identified the type of burn wound, calculated the total body surface area, described treatment interventions and associated risks, dressed the wound, and shared reflections of their feelings related to working with patients experiencing burn wounds.

“I know what my intentions were with this activity, but the students surpassed it,” said instructor Kasey Beckman-Sirk. “It was wonderful to see them excited, actively engaged and using good teamwork and communication skills to successfully complete this burn wound simulation.”

Students said the activity was a fun way to help them learn about initial burn wound assessment and emergency care.
