WVU COVID-19 Vaccine Distribution Update

Throughout the coming weeks, West Virginia University will continue to receive a limited number of COVID-19 vaccine doses designated for higher education employees. However, with the recent launch of the statewide vaccine pre-registration portal and vaccination clinics now established in all 55 counties, WVU soon will begin phasing out the vaccination clinic located at the Student Recreation Center.

In the meantime, the University will continue to distribute doses in accordance with State guidelines developed by the West Virginia Joint Interagency Task Force. Based on those recommendations, age is the primary determinant of risk for contracting and dying from the COVID-19 virus.

As part of Phase 1-D, higher education employees aged 65 and older will receive priority for these first waves of vaccines, followed by those aged 50 and older. WVU Medicine is vaccinating health care providers and hospital staff as part of phases 1-A and 1-C.

Employees Aged 50 and Older

Throughout the past several weeks, WVU faculty and staff based in Morgantown who met eligibility requirements (aged 50 or older) were sent an email questionnaire from covidvaccine@mail.wvu.edu to determine their willingness and availability to take a vaccine.

Eligible employees who responded to the questionnaire and expressed interest in receiving a vaccine were placed in the current priority group for COVID-19 immunization. These employees were provided the opportunity to schedule an appointment to receive a vaccine through WVU at the Student Recreation Center. Appointments are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

Employees aged 50 and older who did not respond to the initial questionnaire were sent a new survey from covidvaccine@mail.wvu.edu on Monday, Feb. 8. The subject line for that message was “Action Required: WVU COVID-19 Vaccine Waitlist Questionnaire.”

Respondents to the new survey will be added to a waitlist to receive a COVID-19 vaccine through the University and will be notified if a dose becomes available to them.

These individuals also are encouraged to sign up for a vaccine through the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) pre-registration portal if they are West Virginia residents.

Employees aged 50 and older who reside out of state are encouraged to contact their local health department for guidance.

Employees and Students Aged 49 and Younger

WVU faculty, staff and students aged 49 and younger who are West Virginia residents and wish to receive a COVID-19 vaccine are encouraged to sign up through the DHHR pre-registration portal.

The portal enables West Virginians to pre-register for COVID-19 vaccination and receive updates through text, phone and/or email. Additional information is available at vaccinate.wv.gov or by calling 833-734-0965 Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The State will work to meet demand as quickly as vaccines are available.

Those employees and students who are not West Virginia residents should contact their local health department for guidance on COVID-19 vaccine registration options.
