With the novel coronavirus pandemic keeping Americans indoors, preliminary data suggests it has led to a decrease in crime. But one crime expert at West Virginia University cautions that “every crisis is an opportunity for people to discover themselves, and to reveal who they are to others.”

WVU’s Statler College develops surgical mask extender template for public distribution
The Innovation Hub, a prototyping center in the Benjamin M. Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources at West Virginia University, has successfully created surgical mask extenders to be used by health care professionals.
WVU medical, education experts create project to help parents ‘look for the helpers’ during COVID-19 pandemic
A group of medical and education experts at West Virginia University is asking parents to take the advice of Mr. (Fred) Rogers and “look for the helpers” during the COVID-19 pandemic. Leveraging Education To Show Gratitude of Occupations (LETS GO), aims to educate youth about a number of careers essential to combatting the virus, from epidemiologists and health officers to food service workers and custodians. The project also aims to share gratitude for the essential workers. As students learn about each field, they are asked to create a card or sign, snap a photo or write a letter to share with workers in that profession.

Clay Marsh, MD, WVU Health Sciences vice president and executive dean, announced Tue., March 31 that Anthony ‘Tom’ Borgia, DDS, MHA, will step down as dean of the School of Dentistry after 10 years of leadership in May 2020.

Dental school Tournament of Tails helps purchase smoking cessation aids for patients
Money raised from the "Tournament of Tails" will go toward the WVU Tobacco Cessation Fund. The event raised $1,814 last year and funds are being used to purchase nicotine replacement therapies. The products are available as "trial packs" for trained students to give to patients who are interested in nicotine replacement therapy options.
