WVU receives CDC award to curb vaping and opioid abuse, improve health outcomes in West Virginia
West Virginia University’s efforts to address chronic disease and substance abuse prevention, growing concerns related to vaping and youth mental health issues will be bolstered by an award from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to fund the West Virginia Prevention Research Center in the School of Public Health.

Dr. Darrin Nichols, a resident physician of Charleston Area Medical Center Family Medicine Center and a graduate of the WVU School of Medicine, was awarded the 2019 recipient of the American Academy of Family Physicians Award for Excellence in Graduate Medical Education during the organization’s annual meeting in Philadelphia in September.
New training program designed for clinical trial leaders in West Virginia
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- Clinical researchers across West Virginia have a new resource at their fingertips. In October, the West Virginia Clinical and Translational Science Institute (WVCTSI) is launching the Principal Investigators’ (PI) Academy, which is designed to provide guidance and direction to investigators conducting or planning to conduct clinical trials.

WVU Pharmacy student one of seven national student officers for Industry Pharmacists Organization (IPhO)
Krystal Hughes, a third-year pharmacy student at the West Virginia University School of Pharmacy, is one of seven students acting as a national student officer for the Industry Pharmacists Organization (IPhO). Hughes is a preceptor to IPhO’s numerous regional student officers and interns across the country. Her duties include recruiting and hiring interns, conducting interviews and establishing and managing projects on a large scale. This is the first year that IPhO has had and internships director. Hughes will hold the position until spring 2020.

America’s opioid epidemic will go down in history alongside the Spanish flu, typhoid, polio and AIDS as one of our worst public health disasters. Between 1999 and 2017, almost 218,000 people in the United States died from overdoses connected to prescription opioids, and almost as many more died from overdoses connected to illicit opioids. Of the 70,000 drug overdose deaths in 2017, two-thirds of them were opioid-connected. Deaths continue at the rate of 130 a day.
