A special preview of the WVU Museum of the Health Sciences will be held on Oct. 13 at 3 p.m. in the Pylons area, along with a book signing with long-time WVU pediatric cardiologist and author Dr. Bill Neal for his newly released title, “The Quite Advocate: Edward J. Van Liere’s Influence on Medical Education in West Virginia.”
School of Medicine names orthopedic physical therapist
Renee McGinnis, PT, DPT, OCS, COMT, an accomplished orthopedic physical therapist, joined the West Virginia University School of Medicine’s Division of Physical Therapy as assistant professor.

Digital impression equipment, lasers, 3-D imaging systems, oral cancer screening devices, advanced implant systems and more will be utilized at no financial cost to the dental school program.
WVU researcher receives $1.6 million to fight inflammation in neurodegenerative diseases
Inflammation is overwhelmingly beneficial, helping to fight illnesses caused by bacteria and viruses. However, most neurological diseases involve inflammation in the brain, which is thought to contribute to or exacerbate diseases.
WVU biochemist goes online to X-ray life-sustaining crystals
On August 22, Aaron Robart, assistant professor of biochemistry in the WVU School of Medicine, used the powerful Advanced Photon Source at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Argonne National Laboratory in Chicago to zap three types of life-sustaining crystals with X-rays revealing molecular structures that resemble tangles of corkscrew pasta or patterns of daisies.

Health navigators funding restored
A West Virginia University program that has helped thousands of West Virginians sign up for health insurance has received a third year of funding from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). The program serves 29 West Virginia counties in both panhandles and the north central part of the state.
WVU-led report shows smoking has not flamed out in all populations
The number one cause of preventable death is on the decline, but not for everyone. A new report led by a West Virginia University public health expert shows that despite a drop in cigarette smoking nationwide, minority groups are at higher risk for tobacco-related diseases than others.
After Charlottesville: Diversity and Inclusion at Health Sciences
A month after the tragic events on and around the campus of the University of Virginia, the Health Sciences Center and WVU Medicine community will hold a Town Hall Wednesday, Sept. 20 at 12 noon in Okey Patteson Auditorium to discuss what we are doing - and what we can do better - to build and maintain a diverse and inclusive environment for our students, faculty, patients, staff and visitors.
WVU, WV attorney general expand eighth grade drug prevention program
West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey and West Virginia University have partnered to expand a program aimed at sharing drug abuse prevention information with eighth grade students in West Virginia. The initiative, launched in March with the West Virginia University School of Nursing, now also involves West Virginia University’s School of Pharmacy and two other universities.
