For retiring WVU alumnus, saving lives, improving readiness highlights of 30-year military medicine career
Maj. Gen. Richard Thomas, after spending 30 years as a soldier practicing military medicine around the world, retired from the Army Friday, April 29. As Thomas, a three-time graduate of West Virginia University, readied himself to leave the Army he summed up his career with a simple philosophy: It’s all about saving lives and improving readiness.
WVU Medical Laboratory Science program sails through accreditation visit
WVU’s Medical Laboratory Science program recently sailed through the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences’ accreditation process with flying colors. The preliminary report showed no citations or concerns and the recommendation for a full, ten-year accreditation status was made to the NAACLS.
WVU School of Nursing and WVU Medicine to celebrate National Nurses Week
Nearly four million nurses around the country provide extraordinary care to patients every day. In honor of these men and women, the WVU School of Nursing and WVU Medicine will celebrate National Nurses Week by hosting a Nurses Week Carnival at the Erickson Alumni Center on Wednesday, May 11, 2106, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The name has changed to the WVU Cancer Institute – University Healthcare Regional Cancer Center.
Food service plan on fast track; catering options change at HSC
Fresh Hospitality, which operates restaurants at Evansdale Crossing and will be operating the revamped food service at the HSC, is planning a rapid renovation to the Health Sciences Café area on the ground floor of Health Sciences South. The HSC cafeteria will close Friday, May 6.
West Virginia University offers courses to reduce opioid use
West Virginia University has added a new online course, “The Treatment of Pain and Addiction Utilizing Education and Proper Prescribing: The New Paradigm Continued.” The course will provide West Virginia physicians, physician assistants, nurses, and dentists with continuing education credit, and also fulfill the state’s requirement for training in avoiding diversion of prescriptions drugs into the illicit market.
Technopalooza 2016
The Office of Research and Graduate Education will be hosting a fast paced, social event with brief presentations, posters and informal conversations focused on cutting edge technology and shared resources open to all researchers at WVU. We want to increase awareness of all the assets we have available to drive our science. This event is campus wide, so please spread the word and bring your colleagues along. WVU honors Health Sciences Faculty and Staff April 28; winners announced
The awards honor faculty and staff who have made exceptional contributions to the mission of the University and the HSC over the past year. WVU Provost Joyce McConnell and HSC Vice President Clay Marsh will present awards Thursday, April 28 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Pylons Lobby.
