School of Medicine names new WV STEPS director and graduate medical education assistant dean
Dorian Williams, M.D., professor in the Department of Family Medicine and medical director of the Clinical and Pharmacologic Research Center has been named assistant dean for simulation and technology in education in the School of Medicine and medical director of the WV STEPS David and Jo Ann Shaw Center for Simulation Training and Education for Patient Safety. Dr. Williams replaces David Wilks, M.D., who will be retiring in June.
WVU researcher receives $1.7 million award to fight cancer
A West Virginia University researcher has been awarded $1.7 million to conduct research into how immunotherapy can strengthen the body’s own defenses to improve treatment for breast and lung cancers.
WVU BOG approves new degree programs, receives update on Beckley campus
The WVU Board of Governors gave final approval to repurpose an existing School of Pharmacy Ph.D. track into its own independent doctoral program, which will offer a new doctor of philosophy degree in health services and outcomes research.
WVU to expand food and retail options at Health Sciences
Beginning in May, the cafeteria will close for renovations. A new food court, modeled on the successful WVU Evansdale Crossing project that opened in January, will open later this year.
WVCTSI unveils Project ECHO
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Earlier today the West Virginia Clinical and Translational Science Institute held a kickoff event to showcase the upcoming Project ECHO (Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes) in West Virginia. This program will utilize multipoint video conferencing to address hepatitis C cases that have risen steadily in recent years in West Virginia largely due to the increase in intravenous drug use.
'Connect With Clay' to discuss 'State of the Health Sciences'
In his next “Connect with Clay” open forum, Vice President and Executive Dean Clay Marsh will address the terrific year we’ve had at Health Sciences, while also looking forward to the big changes and challenges ahead. He will also reinforce our commitment to West Virginia’s health challenges, including opioid addiction, obesity, and elderly care. He will also discuss upcoming changes to improve the learning and working environment on our campus. This session will be broadcast live to all campuses and will be held in Room 1905 Health Sciences South on Tuesday, April 19 at 12 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. All are encouraged to attend.
Exercise Physiology students and faculty present their research at the Experimental Biology meeting in San Diego
Experimental Biology is a national research conference held annually that facilitates the exchange of cutting edge ideas, networking opportunities among colleagues, and professional advice from experts from all over the world. Faculty and graduate/undergraduate students from the Division of Exercise Physiology had a strong footing this year at the conference which was held in San Diego, CA. Ph.D. candidates from the Division of Exercise Physiology presenting their own work at the conference were Kayla Branyan, Evan DeVallance, and Kent Lemaster. Their work examined the role of arterial dysfunction in the Metabolic syndrome. In particular, Evan DeVallance (Phd Student in Dr Chantler’s lab) had a very busy time at the conference presenting 3 oral talks (two at overlapping sessions) and 3 posters. Undergraduate students from the Division of Exercise Physiology, Whitney Sheets and Ashlee Seldomridge, presented data collected in Dr. Frisbee’s and Dr. Chantler’s labs, respectively. Dr. Olfert gave a keynote talk and chaired a session entitled “Omics Applications in Metabolic Physiology”. The labs at West Virginia University are led by faculty mentors, Dr. Mark Olfert, Dr. Randy Bryner, Jefferson Frisbee, and Dr. Paul Chantler.
