WVU to hold inaugural Day of Giving Nov. 8

One day. The words suggest a moment and a future. Both are being emphasized on Nov. 8 as WVU is reaching out to students, alumni and friends, encouraging them to make a gift – especially ones that go to the general, unrestricted needs of the University and its schools and colleges.

WVU School of Dentistry to lead fight against oral cancer and tobacco addiction

Working in cooperation with the Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center Office of Interprofessional Education, representatives from the WVU School of Pharmacy, School of Public Health, School of Nursing, School of Medicine, School of Dentistry, WVU Cancer Institute and others will be involved in the WVU tobacco treatment training program. It is designed to have healthcare professionals be on the same page for evidence-based treatment of addiction.

School of Dentistry opens and dedicates innovation center

The innovation center is equipped with the best and latest technology dental industry manufacturers have to offer. Digital impression equipment, lasers, 3-D imaging systems, oral cancer screening devices, advanced implant systems and more will be utilized at no financial cost to the dental school program.

To keep from spreading illness among their patients, the best action healthcare providers can take is to wash their hands. Dr. Allison Lastinger, a fellow at WVU, recently studied how adult patients and the parents of pediatric patients can be more comfortable asking their doctors and nurses to wash their hands.

Osher Lifelong Learning Institute and the WVU School of Public Health to host events focused on vulnerable adults

Next month, the WVU School of Public Health and Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) will co-host a series of events focusing on aging, elder abuse and public health policy. Two separate lectures will feature Dr. Pamela B. Teaster, Fellow of the Gerontological Society of America and the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education, followed by OLLI’s annual fall open house event.

WVU in the News: Study aims to increase effectiveness of opioid addiction treatment

A new study being conducted at WVU is aimed at increasing the effectiveness of addiction treatment. As many as 20 percent of people addicted to opioids will not respond to the standard treatment of suboxone. Genetic background is one of several factors WVU and the West Virginia Clinical and Translation Science Institute will study to provide better more patient-specific addiction treatment. The opioid crisis can be traced back to the 1980s when a catastrophic medical mistake opened the door to liberal prescribing of narcotics. The perfect storm of powerful molecules, complex brain physiology, and an over-aggressive pharmaceutical industry, which capitalized on that original error, lead to the current epidemic.
