Students at the West Virginia University College of Law and School of Dentistry will benefit from two scholarship gifts to honor late alumni. Charleston attorney Steven White contributed $50,000 each to pay tribute to longtime friends John Kennedy Bailey and Richard L. Howard.

Medical sociologist to speak about complex effects of social stressors affecting Black Americans
Courtney S. Thomas Tobin will present “Stress, Coping and Health: Insights from Research on Black Americans” on Sept. 29, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Hostler Auditorium (G-17) on the Health Sciences campus. The event is free and open to the public.

The Department of Orthodontics hosted the continuing education presentation, “Everything but the kitchen sink…but on second thought”, on September 9.
WVU researchers sift through the smoke to see how burn pits make veterans ill
A campfire burns wood, but according to West Virginia University School of Medicine researcher Timothy Nurkiewicz, burn pits can consume things like batteries, bullets, jet fuel, surgical waste and human waste. Nurkiewicz, chair of the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology, is studying how inhaling emissions from these burning and smoldering materials could lead to serious health problems in military veterans.
