Clinical Laboratory Tests
The tables and graphs on this page (links below) represent the summary of results for the clinical laboratory tests performed as part of the C8 Health Project. Blood samples were collected from participants in the C8 Health Project according to the protocols established by Brookmar Inc. All laboratory tests were performed by LabCorp Inc. The summary of results presented here are the summary of laboratory test values as reported by LabCorp Inc. While just over 68,000 people participated in the C8 Health Project, due to availability of an insufficient volume of blood for approximately 3,000 people, results for approximately 65,000 participants are reported. All graphs and tables were prepared by the WVU School of Medicine and are copyrighted.
The graphs and tables on this page present the distribution of the reported values for each clinical laboratory test. No measure of variance has been calculated, nor has any statistical testing been performed. Any comparisons between groups are based on visual inspection of the data only.
The lab test results are presented in the context of the expected normal value for each test. A reference for the source of each expected normal value accompanies each graph. For some lab tests, expected normal values will be influenced by differences in reference values at the laboratory performing the test. Consequently, the reported proportions of participants with normal or abnormal results may reflect the inability to adjust for these differences in reference values, and not pathology within the population.
A description of each clinical laboratory test is provided for the convenience of readers. Unless otherwise stated, the information was obtained from the Medline Plus Medical Encyclopedia maintained by the National Library of Medicine (http://medlineplus.gov/). The exact reference URL and date the information was obtained is included within each document.
Special notes on the blood collection protocol as part of the C8 Health Project that may affect the interpretation of all laboratory test values:
For logistical reasons and for the convenience of participants, participants in the C8 Health Project were not required to provide a fasting blood sample and were able to provide the blood sample at the time of day most convenient for them. Some laboratory tests may be affected by diurnal (time of day) factors and / or the fasting status of the participant. Based on the time of last meal provided by participants, it is known that approximately 35-40% of participants had been fasting for 6 or more hours (Description of Fasting Status of Participants). However, it is beyond the scope of the summaries reported here to fully analyze these potential effects. Therefore, unless otherwise stated, the graphs and tables below are for ALL participants, regardless of time of day of the blood draw or the fasting status of the participant.
